This is as much just for my own curiosity as anything.

[Poll #887212]

Even though my employer does not provide me with a cell phone, they take it for granted that I have it. When mine was stolen last weekend and they couldn't reach me -- they were unreasonably perturbed.

That's sort of unreasonable.

By contrast, [livejournal.com profile] cymrullewes' boss at CP Blouin provided a new phone although she already had one, and said, "I don't really care if you use it for personal calls, but I HATE it when I can't get in touch with someone from my own office."

If the boss said she can use it for personal call you should probably get yourself a cingular phone. If you don't plan on using it every day a pay as you go plan is probably the most economical. That is what I do.

That's what I'm thinking, go with Cingular and just get the one. From what I can see, though, the pay-as-you-go plans work out more expensive than just getting the cheapest regular individual plan, unless you plan on cancelling service before the contract is up.

I guess it depends on how you use it. If your going to use it just to call other cingular customers it will be under $30/month.

My plan is:
If (phone==used) then charge $1
If (otherperson <> cingular customer) then charge $0.05/minute

So when I don't use it I don't get charged. Since I only use my phone maybe 10 days a month it is cheaper.

For my previous employer (a small independant ISP, where I was the only tech, long story, shitty job in the end), the arrangement was that I had to get my own phone, and make sure it worked, and they would pay 90% of every bill (unless there was anything unreasonable on there, which didn't happen).

My current employer doesn't do anything of the sort, as we all communicate via IM and IRC (and barely ever meet in person), but in case of emergency stuff with servers, we do call to wake others up if we need it.

That just sounds so much like Cygnus. The IM/IRC (except they were ICB which sort of combines the two) thing. My former employer was just starting to get in to IM for everyone and they had issued cell phones to certain employees (mainly the ones who worked everywhere in the building instead of just at their desks.)
