...my ears are sufficiently plugged up to make me slightly dizzy, and they won't clear.  Two pseudephedrine tablets under the tongue (ack!  Foul taste!) have so far not helped.  I'll try two more in a minute, but I sense an impending high-test red curry somewhere in the immediate future.  About three whole habaƱeros ought to do the job, at a guess.

Under the tongue? Not swallowed? Why, if you don't mind my asking?
Monday, April 25th, 2005 10:34 am (UTC)
Because if you put them under your tongue, the drug goes directly into your bloodstream through the mucous membranes.
Pro: Works much faster than swallowing them.
Con: Pseudephedrine hydrochloride tastes terrible. (That's why they're sugar-coated.)
For reference, if you're really badly congested, an average adult can safely take four at a time and do it twice in six hours, so long as you don't exceed (iirc) 12 tablets in 24 hours. Consider that an emergency procedure, though. (It's not recommended, and you shouldn't make a regular practice of it, but you won't harm yourself by doing so only when you really need to.) I've only once had my ears so badly plugged I had to do that; my ears were hurting so badly I was seriously concerned I was going to rupture an eardrum.

/me votes for the curry as the preferred option.

However I tend to find that I really can't get decent and really hot Indian food to the standards I expect here. Unfortuntely I was badly spoiled by having a lot of Indian friends back in South Africa - the city (Durban) I lived in had the largest Indian population in the world (outside of India).

It's not just the curry, it's all the other Indian food that I miss as well, esp. around Diwali.

A second dose mostly cleared my ears, but yes, the hot curry is the preferred longer-term solution (and won't leave me dizzy or dry-mouthed).

A second dose mostly cleared my ears,

This is in reference to the past? Or to today? If ~ the past.... How do you feel today, by now that is?

Didn't you recently say the Spring allergies were getting to you, also.... Is it all part of the same? :-(
Monday, April 25th, 2005 08:27 pm (UTC)
Nope, nothing to do with allergies.

Nope, nothing to do with allergies.

So, how do they feel, today?

A lot better. Didn't get my red curry yesterday, but two doses of sudafed drained them enough to relieve the pressure.

Not that I'm trying to one up you, or anything, but Saturday night I got Guiness up my sinuses.
Oh, and try piquins in the curry; 140,000 scoville each. Mm, mm, good!
Monday, April 25th, 2005 01:17 pm (UTC)
I'm seeing piquins rated 100,000 to 120,000 Scovilles, and habaƱeros 100,000 to 350,000.

Hm. Interesting. The ones I bought claim the 140,000. I wasn't aware there was that much variation. I'm going to have to find some of those 300K+ habeneros.

You want to get a deep orange one. The pale orange ones aren't that hot. The red ones aren't that hot either.

North Carolina has nice and hot habs. So does New Mexico. They're sort of weak up here in NH.

By nice, I mean they had a good flavour. By hot, well, up there with at least 275,000 Scovilles. :-)

Got wasabe?
Monday, April 25th, 2005 06:37 pm (UTC)
Wasabi and that powder is in my pantry in Greenville. I've not seen that clear his sinus for more than 5 minutes, though. The red curry works once and for the rest of the month.

Besides, wasabi in large quantities doesn't clear my sinuses, it just gives me a headache.
