Texting while driving is bad, ummm...kay?

Last month's Car & Driver also contained an impromptu mini-study that they did, comparing driving sober to driving drunk and driving while texting. Their conclusion was basically that if you have to choose between sharing the road with a drunk driver or one who's texting, pick the drunk. You're safer.

Talking on the phone is about the same as low level, above the legal limit too much alcohol. Texting requires more thought, more looking away from the road, and more finger dexterity.

Truly, it's a bad, bad thing.

It's true that sometimes it's really good to get some info while driving. But, people can follow my example, and pull off the damn road.

And now you know why texting while driving is now illegal in Virginia. We are slow about most things, but once in awhile, we get it right.

That can't be right. Everyone I know who texts while driving says he can drive perfectly well while texting.

Seriously (to change the subject slightly) if I had a dollar for everyone who's told me that they, unlike most people, can safely use a cell phone while driving, I could retire. This must be like the old saying about programmers: 1 out of 10 can actually write good code without first making a flow chart; problem is, 9 out of 10 think they're him.

How much for the boss who demands that you use the cell phone while driving because he does? I wanted to strangle him for demanding that I call one of our subcontractors while I was on the way back to the office. I, instead, stopped at their office because they were on my way back to our office. It was a win-win for me because I didn't get in an accident on a major interstate and I got to put a face to a voice.
