The Large Hadron Collider is online and generating beam collisions at 7TeV.  All four major experiments are producing good data.

Now, we begin to pry open another level of the Universe.  I can't tell you how much it excites me to see this happening.

Of course, this means that there is at least one nutjob out there who is doing the five-minute-refresh thing on http://hasthelargehadroncolliderdestroyedtheworldyet.com/ (http://hasthelargehadroncolliderdestroyedtheworldyet.com/), just waiting to post one final "I told you so..."

I nearly cried when the LHC lost its liquid helium and some of it was thereby destroyed the first time they tried to start it up. It's great to see that it's online and working just fine! (Problem: How do we get the brains of the doomsayers who've been screaming that the LHC will destroy us all to work better? Unfortunately, letting out all the liquid helium in them won't shut them up, because they don't have any liquid helium in them. I think somebody at Microsoft did the original programming of their brains -- the same people responsible for Windows 95 . . .)

Seriously, just after the LHC was supposedly read to go, the first time, but before the accident that shut it down for months, this idiot camped out on my blog generating comment after comment on a post I'd made there linking the Universe Today articles on the LHC, screaming in 20-point type that he and his father, who were both vets and engineers, had computed everything and the LHC was going to generate huge black holes that would gobble up the Earth and everything on it and so on and yatta yatta blah etcetera. I never responded to any of them, just left them there hanging so the whole world could see what lunatics they were. He finally went away and stopped commenting on my blog. Wonder what he and his father are doing now? And what lunatic asylum they're doing it in?

I was almost expecting you to post to that awesome little CG vid someone made the first time, of a 'live feed' from the LHC, complete with emergent rampant singularity sparking and consuming everything..

I haven't seen it....
