So SS -- Social Services, that is -- is coming after us and threatening we may lose our benefits, because of some "pension account" they think we may have at some unspecified bank.  We're telling them, "Sure, by all means investigate this.  We're 99.9% certain you're mistaken, but if you should happen to find such an account in one or the other of our names, please tell us about it, because we could really use some extra financial resources."

Oh hray, just what you need.

Well, yeah. If they find the account. :-)

If they don't then nothing changes. But I'm worried about why they think there is one. I'd hate to find out that someone around us told them we did.

Yeah, that nasty thought had crossed my mind too.

If it does turn out to be that, you have my arm in delivering the smackdown.

You really wanna? Find us a job in New Zealand. That's the one thing they would hate to have happen -- us to find a job and move very far away.

What she said -- assuming, of course, there's a foundation to the Nasty Speculation. But both of the two potential culprits we can think of would hate it. "Oh, and thank you, yes, we WILL take the money you seeded the account you opened in our name with. It'll pay our moving expenses." If this isn't just some clerical hiccup and someone did open up an account in our name with enough money in it to lose us our benefits, it's most likely enough to get us out of this hellhole. And what is such a Culprit going to do? Say "Oh, sure, I opened this account in their name, but the money I put in it wasn't for them to use?"

I really hope it isn't Enemy Action, but if it is,

Dudes. You both know that if I see suitable jobs in this country I'll send them your way. I'd love to see you guys out here.

His resume is at http://co.ordinate.org

And actually I need to get back to school. All I have is a degree in construction management. I am a great estimator and a good scheduler. I wouldn't want me as a supervisor on a job site though. I could do it from the office. (I don't think I know enough slang to be taken seriously on site.)

Is it possible this pension account is attached to a previous owner of your Social Security number? (You didn't realize they recycled them, did you?) They started recycling SS#s in the '80's, reissuing the numbers of folks who had died. This has created confusion before.

That possibility had not occurred to me, no. I didn't know they were recycling them, but it doesn't surprise me -- a simple mental arithmetic check suggests they'd run out of numbers fairly soon.
