There's stuff in this I'd actually missed on previous readings.  It was so stupid my brain optimized the worst of the bullshit out altogether.

Perhaps I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, but this quote:

leads me to believe they just want to diversify their brand, and while they cannot trademark the term "Sci Fi", they can trademark "Syfy".

As godawful as it may be.

(Don't get me wrong, I agree completely with the rest of the analyses—both yours and strega42's. I'm just pointing out a reason for the name change that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.)

No, it hasn't gone unnoticed. In fact, it's about the only remotely justifiable part of the whole debacle.
