About a week ago, while in the hospital, two tiny jagged shards of something yellowish-white cut their way out through my gum, sort of along the line of the jawbone right before it reaches the roof of my mouth.  Starting about two days after that, there's been what felt like the edge of a tooth there, as though an extra tooth was growing out of the roof of my mouth.  Today, I pulled a roughly 5mm by 3mm by 2.5mm jagged piece of what looks more than anything else like tooth dentine out of the same spot.  It didn't seem to be attached to anything, and I'm reasonably certain it's not bone.  It's almost as though an extra tooth started growing in a spot where there isn't supposed to be one.

Needless to say, this has me mightily puzzled.  I need to see a dentist as soon as I can.

Could it be a misplaced Tonsilolith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonsillolith)

I can't rule it out, though this has what looks like part of a pulp cavity ... it really does resemble a shard of a partly-formed tooth.

[livejournal.com profile] sammyd's uncle and sister had third sets of teeth grow in like that.

Did you ever break any teeth (like in that motorcycle accident)? A part of a tooth could have lodged up there and it's just now coming back to the surface.

Nope. I chipped an incisor once, but it healed. Never even had any cavities (although I recently discoverered I have my first now).

what lisa_marli said... or if you ever had a wisdom tooth out in such a way that they had to break it, sometimes they don't get all the pieces and they come out later (or so i was told) although usually pretty quickly.

...definitely worth checking up on, i'd think.

my dad's cousin had three sets of teeth. a friend of mine had five different sets of wisdom teeth. replaceable body parts are weird......

Nope, never broke a tooth or had to have one extracted. This bit seems like it was just growing there on its own.

It sounds more like an odontoma to me.

I had one of these, large, perfectly rounded, containing all the components of a tooth, but sitting behind a tooth and not fully formed.

Had to have surgery to remove it.

That said, it was big and obvious to my dentist... when was the last time you had a dental X-ray? They generally catch this sort of thing.

Rather too long ago, I'm afraid. Sitting up near the top of the "Immediately Pending" tab of my to-do list is the item "MUST SEE DENTIST"....

I just looked up odontomas, and ... I don't know. It's a possibility. I need to see the dentist anyway, having noticd some time back that I've acquired my first-ever cavity (outer face of my back upper right molar). I figure I'll just have the dentist check the whole area out when I see him.
