"[Washington, D.C.] Police Chief Cathy Lanier sent the following memo to District residents yesterday evening in the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling on the city's gun ban."

(Text omitted for brevity, find it behind the link.  Capsule summary:  "Yes, we know that's what the Supreme Court said, but LA LA LA LA LA LA WE CAN'T HEAR YOU.)

Clearly, my knowledge of US geography is sadly remiss.  I have labored under the mistaken impression that Washington, D.C, sits on the Potomac, not on de Nile.

There will be court cases. DC will get its ass kicked for making those cases necessary by flagrantly ignoring / wilfully misinterpreting the Supreme Court's decision.

The DC officials actually *responsible* for this - and the court cases which will transfer six- or seven-digit money from the DC budget to that of various lawyers involved - will walk away unscathed. Maybe a little bit politically. Probably not.

I'd like to see elected officials who cause lawsuits that are obviously frivolous and get smacked down, made *personally* responsible for the cost of those lawsuits.

"Yes, Ms. Police Chief, you are required to follow the Heller decision. This court affirms that your actions were in bad faith. We can't dismiss you from the police force, so you'll keep that position. But you have thirty days from today to vacate your house so this court can sell it, all your savings and investments have been seized effective immediately, and you owe us $220,000. We'll be taking 50% of your future after-tax income until that's paid off. Your city's taxpayers are NOT going to foot the bill for the lawsuit you made necessary, and the American taxpayers aren't going to foot the cost of the other side of it."

I suspect that after one or two instances like this, of public officials having their *personal* assets wiped out, we'd see a lot less deliberately-obtuse-to-the-Constitution behavior.

I can't argue with that. It's not like she can make any reasonable pretense that she doesn't know she's doing her best to ignore as much of the ruling as she thinks she can get away with.

And personally, I'd like to see elected officials who propose or sponsor blatantly unconstitutional legislation immediately dismissed from office for wilful violation of their oath of office, and barred for life from ever holding public office or any position of public trust again.

Lanier's an appointed official. IIRC, she serves at the pleasure of either the city council or the mayor.

Obvious cancerous tumor. Time for surgical intervention, followed by radiation therapy.
