When reading kids their bedtime stories, the most frightening thing to upon opening a book bearing the name of some classic fairy tale is "Retold by ..."

Because when you see that, you just know it's going to SUCK.  Because if the ... "reteller" ... had any actual writing ability, they'd be coming up with their own story, instead of filing the serial numbers off someone else's to make the result copyrightable.

Well, yeah. Except for "The Princess Bride".

Well sure, 'cause that was a literary device.

I admire you for reading to your children. That is something I just can't bring myself to do. I have moderate dyslexia, and reading something I am not very familiar with is an intensely embarrassing experience. I usually just told bedtime stories. I think that falls under your "Retold by ..." umbrella. Fortunately, the children never seemed to notice much difference.

I tell them my own sometimes. I'm collecting them into a book. They LIKE the giant stories, and Edvard and the Ogre. They keep asking me for a frost-giant story, but I don't have one yet.

That is cool! I guess Dads get to tell the best stories.

What Disney has done to Winnie The Pooh makes me want to write "All Quiet In The Hundred Acre Wood".

:-)

If it wasn't for that they'd probably try to sue you, I'd say, "Do it" ...

It'd be a legal parody I believe.

That never stopped the bastards from trying before. :p All they have to do is out-lawyer you into bankruptcy.
