That article is not the least bit reassuring, either. I mean, I know I've watched too many bad SF films, but still, I can't help but wonder how they are going to make sure it doesn't come down in an inhabited area...
By the sound of it, they've lost all control over it and can't make sure. Though if it looked like it was going to come down in a densely populated area, they could probably try to at least break it up a bit with a missile launched from an F-15. (We have that capability.)
Hey, we could always invite the Chinese to lob a few of their ground-based ASATs at it ...
even better, as it's coming down, the chinese go and capture is with their plastic SR-71 clones and spirit it away to use the evil hydrazine as well as the latent pictures against us in some PLOT :)
Joy. Any bets, that if it does come in a population zone, a bunch of asshats will group on ground zero to either protest and/or to watch? Then their heirs will sue somebody for not keeping them (the asshats) out of harms way.
All TK material should be unclass, the last downgrade was in '97 http://www.fas.org/sgp/othergov/nsa/nsa971.html
I'm not sure what the sat itself is classified as.
Lots of TK and NRO declass docs here: http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB225/index.htm
The tech in TK is so terribly out of date now. There's a digital camera with something like 128 million cells that can do an extreme range of frequencies and can do asa 20000 or something as meaningless. I'm not sure who built it. It was a CCD that measured around 4" square.
