I am officially wiped out, for the moment.  I just went out and ran as best I can around the pumphouse and the loop around the out-laws' house, total probably around 200 yards, perhaps a little more.  By the end of that my knees were so beat I didn't think I could run any further without falling, but I spent the next 15 minutes or so working out with a bokutoh, which left me ready to drop.

I'm horribly out of condition, but it's a beginning.  My running gait is a sort of controlled stagger at the moment though.  I suspect my knees would last a bit longer if my ankle didn't throw my gait off so badly, but still, they're in sad shape either way.  I don't know how viable running as exercise is going to be, based on this, but I plan on giving it a fair try.

Try a low-impact exercise for a while, at least until you start to build muscle and wind back up. Swimming is good, I'm told... are you in a position to do that?

Not at this moment in time. When we move we'll be looking for an apartment complex with pool and hot tub.

Swimming would be excellent, but we don't really have access to a pool at present. It's something we'll be looking for when we finally escape this dump.

Swimming, yes, or a bicycle... the 'cycle is a little rougher on knees and ankles but far gentler than the pounding running gives them... if cycling isn't an option, just plain old brisk walking is a lot less pounding than running, due to the fact that when you run you leave the ground and Mr. Newton decrees that what goes up, comes down painfully...

And if possible get you some good shoes. New Balance, or most things not made in the PRC... and shoes, like guns, you have to buy to fit you individually...

Actually, I have a pair of Filas. :) (Which we found at Ross for about $30, iirc.) Bicycle would probably be very good too, but I'm not sure there's much of anywhere bicycle-safe around here to ride. I used to have a pretty nice bike, a cross-bike from Costco's house brand, but I sold it to [livejournal.com profile] echristo some years ago because I just wasn't ever riding it and I needed the space.
