ya' can't wear a diamond down, not really, but they're quite brittle. all kinds of interesting metaphors to make of that.

Well, yeah, there's that too. But in about 10¹⁶⁰ years, the protons will decay. Then everything made of baryonic matter is fucked. :)

My memory says it's alexandrite..... but that's probably wrong

It may be the one that's natural. This one is formed when a meteor strikes the earth. The rarest would be one from Arizona the other one is from I think Russia. Tanzanite is another one but it's heat modified and very fragile.
