Actually, a diamond is for about 10160 years, like pretty much everything else.

ya' can't wear a diamond down, not really, but they're quite brittle. all kinds of interesting metaphors to make of that.

Well, yeah, there's that too. But in about 10160 years, the protons will decay. Then everything made of baryonic matter is fucked. :)

hopefully we'll crunch back into a new universe by then and will have a whole new set of fresh shiny protons or proton equivalents to play with.

True. They're making them in Florida now but the guys who're doing it are cashing in rather than get killed by DeBeers.

My memory says it's alexandrite..... but that's probably wrong

It may be the one that's natural. This one is formed when a meteor strikes the earth. The rarest would be one from Arizona the other one is from I think Russia. Tanzanite is another one but it's heat modified and very fragile.
