This has long been a pet peeve of mine:  Packaging, on even the most trivial items, that you cannot open (a) without tools and (b) without almost totally destroying it.  It goes right along with products packed in a bag, inside molded styrofoam packing, inside a box, inside an ultrasonically-welded plastic blister pack, inside a box, inside shrink-wrap.

I read a news article about this recently (I want to say it was linked on Slashdot). Apparently, the current injection bubble stuff is on its way out. Among other things, it causes a shitload of injuries from people trying to rip it apart manually; as I'm sure you can guess, those plastic edges are sharp enough to do arterial and tendon damage.

There are a couple of companies pushing new tamper-proof packaging that's similarly cheap to manufacture and much easier to open. I'm personally looking very forward to it.

In the meantime, I use a Leatherman Charge Ti, which has a gutting hook on it. The gutting hook also works wonderfully for this type of stuff; make a small incision, then gut the package.

Yup, I tend to go at'em with the serrated blade on my Leatherman Wave or a pair of Fiskars scissors.
