This has long been a pet peeve of mine:  Packaging, on even the most trivial items, that you cannot open (a) without tools and (b) without almost totally destroying it.  It goes right along with products packed in a bag, inside molded styrofoam packing, inside a box, inside an ultrasonically-welded plastic blister pack, inside a box, inside shrink-wrap.

That is why I carry a knife. I keep that knife very sharp.

Yep. [livejournal.com profile] sammy_grrrl got a My Little Pony. It was encased in plastic with a cardboard backing. Then, the hair was held to the packaging with two strips of plastic on either side of the hair, *woven* together, encased in tape. There were three of these. Two on the mane and one on the tail. What the hell?

I read a news article about this recently (I want to say it was linked on Slashdot). Apparently, the current injection bubble stuff is on its way out. Among other things, it causes a shitload of injuries from people trying to rip it apart manually; as I'm sure you can guess, those plastic edges are sharp enough to do arterial and tendon damage.

There are a couple of companies pushing new tamper-proof packaging that's similarly cheap to manufacture and much easier to open. I'm personally looking very forward to it.

In the meantime, I use a Leatherman Charge Ti, which has a gutting hook on it. The gutting hook also works wonderfully for this type of stuff; make a small incision, then gut the package.

Yup, I tend to go at'em with the serrated blade on my Leatherman Wave or a pair of Fiskars scissors.

The long standing fight between the five finger discount and the honest customer.

Of course the return policy at most stores includes "In the orig packaging, but that packaging has to be destroyed to open it.
