The good news:  Today, I finally found compact fluorescent bulbs claiming to emit a daylight-equivalent spectrum, with a claimed light output equivalence to 100w incandescent, backed up by lumen output figures that seem to indicate it might even actually be an honest claim.  So I bought one to try in one of the torchiere lamps.

Now the bad news:  The socket in said torchiere turns out to be so deeply recessed that the compact fluorescent won't fit.  You physically cannot get the bulb far enough into the lamp to engage the socket.

Bah.

Contact the manufacturer and tell them the problem. They may have a solution and/or may swap out the bulbs for ones that will work.

Googling for them turns out to be a dead end. Fortunately, there's a phone number on the package. They do have a website; it's www.tcpi.com (http://www.tcpi.com). They make longer-neck bulbs, but suggested an Edison-base socket extender as a fix for now. I wasn't aware such things existed, but it certainly sounds like it'd work.

Which bulb did you buy? I have a lot of compact fluorescents at the house. Some I like better than others.

This bulb is n:vision brand, 27W, 1300 lumens, 9-year warranty, $6.97 at Home Despot. The package claims $73 in energy savings over the life of the bulb.

So ... brand/model for this CF bulb?

See previous comment thread. :)

n:vision model ESM27, SKU 230-520, 27W, 5500K, 9-year warranty, $6.97 at Home Despot. Manufacturer's web site here (http://www.tcpi.com/), but it's not hugely useful, although it does show they make CFLs up to 42W (don't know if the 42W units are 5500K, though).

I have since learned Edison-base bulb extenders are available for a couple of bucks from any decent hardware store to fix the neck-clearance problem.

I bought one a while ago, don't recall the brand offhand, but it did a decent job of full spectrum. I have recessed pot fixtures, and also had the same problem as you with fitting them in.

I got an Edison extender, and then found unfortunetly that they then stuck out of the fixture, which is not acceptable, as most of my ceilings are 6.5 ft only (I'm 5'11").

I used it in one spot where there was enough space ultimately (in the garden shed), and had to stick with 60w equiv CFLs instead that actual fit into my fixtures

I have the same problem with the ceiling fixture in my front hallway. I need to buy Philips brand globe bulbs because the neck on the GE globes is a mm or two too short.

I haven't even considered switching to florescent.
