The good news: Today, I finally found compact fluorescent bulbs claiming to emit a daylight-equivalent spectrum, with a claimed light output equivalence to 100w incandescent, backed up by lumen output figures that seem to indicate it might even actually be an honest claim. So I bought one to try in one of the torchiere lamps.
Now the bad news: The socket in said torchiere turns out to be so deeply recessed that the compact fluorescent won't fit. You physically cannot get the bulb far enough into the lamp to engage the socket.
Bah.

I got an Edison extender, and then found unfortunetly that they then stuck out of the fixture, which is not acceptable, as most of my ceilings are 6.5 ft only (I'm 5'11").
I used it in one spot where there was enough space ultimately (in the garden shed), and had to stick with 60w equiv CFLs instead that actual fit into my fixtures
