"Real nice channel you have here.  It'd be a shame if anything happened to it."

You know you're an asshole when you're so offensive you can base an extortion racket on getting people to pay you to stay out of an IRC channel.

WHo the hell is doing this?

Think about old-time #callahans/alt.callahans regulars and take ONE guess......

Oh. Him.

Well, I'm informed that it was actually first put in the topic by someone else entirely and he just ran with it so it's likely just a big gag. Doesn't make it a good one, mind.

I think the gag would be that he'd take the money and then wouldn't leave. :-p

Sounds like a better idea would be to go drill out one of his kneecaps.

I bet the screams would make a great polyphonic ringtone.

This particular jerk was a good candidate for that approach even before this racket.

Ich kann nicht mit dem argumentieren.

What the hell happened to /ignore?
Monday, June 12th, 2006 11:31 am (UTC)
Well, what you have to understand is that much of Undernet #callahans is a bit dysfunctional in the first place. There are many people there who hold the opinion that Using /ignore Is Bad, because, well, /ignoring someone who's being a deliberately offensive troll and intentionally trying to disrupt the channel and stir up trouble between other patrons is, like, rude. Abusers Have Rights Too, or something like that.

There were several reasons most of the current Freenode #callahans patrons left Undernet. One was the appalling instability of Undernet at the time; we were tired of constant netsplits and as much as twenty minutes lag from one "side" of the channel to the other. But another one was that there had come to be so many bleeding hearts in channel it had become politically impossible to boot some troll who was being deliberately offensive (yet god forbid anyone, however calm and reasonable, mention a subject that any of the bleeding hearts in channel thought politically incorrect).

See our FAQ for more on the above. (http://co.ordinate.org/callahans/faq.html)

I finally got away from IRC, too many assholes, web forums are better for discussion and the other chat/IM services pwn my current friends.

It sounds like you would do better with a private IRC server.

This is why Freenode is putting so much effort into breaking away from the traditional IRC culture. And mostly, it's working.

It's not extortion; as was already mentioned, /ignore is freely available. If someone is so stupid to pay, and not use /ignore, do you really have any pity for them? And don't forget the other side of the coin, http://pauamma.nerim.net/banning_brendan.order.html wherein channel staff will ban someone for money. See, that isn't consensual, I'm not agreeing to be banned (except for the stipulated conditions on my web page); My method is consensual, as noone *has* to take part in it (which by the way, noone has yet, some ppl got smart and used ignore).

Side note to #c users in freenode (net?): Mike is being recoded and updated, and the source is going to be open-sourced, so dunno what you have there (I've heard you have a cat), but his forum is at http://3whack.org/mike if any want to participiate.
