The state Commonwealth of Massachusetts is barking mad.  Official state muffin?  Official state polka?  Official state glee club song?  Official state DONUT?!?

The Massachusetts State Assembly gets paid good money, out of tax revenues, to come up with this utter garbage and enshrine it into law.  WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT, OVER....

We have a state cookie. Ideally I'd consider it a total waste of time, but when I think about the damage the bozos up in the roundhouse could be doing instead, it doesn't seem like such a bad thing.

By all means, let the legislators work on selecting the official state choice of all the variant covers of TV Guide or whatever. In fact, can we get Congress started on this stuff so they'll stop mucking about with actual laws? I think the USA clearly needs an official donut, muffin, mollusk... hey, I know, let's pick which 50 stars from the night sky are on our flag, too. Glee club song, sure. Polka - well, the national anthem makes a surprisingly good polka already; the version you hear at the Smithsonian is very oompalicious...

Virginia has a State Shell (oyster), State Dog (American Fox Hound) State Insect (Tiger Swallowtail), State Fish (Brook Trout), and a State Mammal (Virginia Big-Eared Bat) as well as the usual flower, tree, bird, and song.

Oh, and a State Beverage (Milk), a State Boat (Chesapeake Bay Deadrise), and a State Fossil (Chesapecten jeffersonius).
