Isn't it ultimately a transliteration from a different character set anyway? It seems a bit like complaining about people spelling russian words wrong in ASCII. Well, of course they're spelled wrong. You're using the wrong letters completely.
...but there's a clearly accepted "standard" spelling, Gandhi, that's been in use for over half a century now. Mohandas Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, it's perfectly well established. Yet many people who should know better persist in spelling it "Ghandi" instead. The same people will huffily correct you if you should chance to misspell the name of their favorite pop star, rapper, or baseball/football/basketball player. "No, it's Britney, not Brittany." "Yo, homie, it be Snoop Doggy Dogg, with two G's. Word."

That's always been one of my big spelling annoyances. It's so... _disrespectful_. Yeah, that's the word I was looking for.
