The cats just caught some kind of large beetle in the kitchen that looked sort of like an elongated scarab, about two inches long but no more than about three eighths of an inch wide, and rounded in section almost like a grasshopper rather than flat like cockroaches are.  They let it get away, though, and it escaped underneath the refrigerator.  I have not the vaguest idea what it was, and had no success attempting to fish it out for a better look.

Any stripes or other marks? Could be a kind of cicada--there's actually a fair variety of those critters. And the world of beetles is a big one, too.

Indeed it is. Aren't they the largest family of insects? We speculated that it might be a cicada, but having never seen a cicada I've nothing to compare to. (And our connection speed is increasingly approaching "usable for text only", which restricts image searching.)

Oh, I meant to say, no visible stripes or anything, no -- seemed pretty much uniformly dark tan.
