I promise I'll come down off the walls Real Soon Now.  What, nervous?  Who, me?  This one's with Google, for a sysadmin position in Mountain View.  Not really the direction we'd prefer to be moving, but, hell... it's Not Here.

Google? Aside from being back in Cali, that couldn't be cooler...

Ed Falk (Carole's ex) works there now. I wonder if that could be put to any leverage... Cross fingers.

Well, at the very least, there's something to be said for knowing it is possible for mere mortals to get hired there.

A buddy of mine says that unless you have a Ph.D from Stanford, you should expect people at Google to be arrogant pricks during the interview. Not that you shouldn't go, but that you should be forewarned of this possibility.

Yeah, I've gotten that impression. The phone screens have been pretty reasonable so far, but honestly, I'm really not in the least expecting to get the job.

Good luck to ya. There are a lot of less desirable places than the SFBA (though some better as well I suppose).

Quite a lot better, I'd say. Though the SFBA does have a few points in its favor.

Honestly, I'm not expecting to get it anyway. I have the impression Google is another of these "We only hire people whose middle name is God" shops like Amazon.

Mountain View? California??

I have good memories of California, having grown up there, but since I left in 1975 there have been a lot of Evil Political F**ks (TM) at work there. Good Skill in your interview, and Good Luck in the move!

mountain View, California, indeed. And yes, politics in the Golden State has gone utterly barmy, which is why we're less than totally enthusiastic about moving back there. If it ends up happening, I don't know what I'll do with my M14; I'll probably have to have someone in a different state hold it for me or something, because with the current state of California's AW law, nobody can be completely sure what's legal and what isn't.
