Libya has sentenced six medical workers (a Palestinian doctor and five Bulgarian nurses) to death for deliberately infecting around 400 children with HIV at a childrens' hospital in Benghazi, allegedly for purposes of AIDS research. Another Bulgarian was sentenced to four years in prison; nine Libyans working at the same hospital were acquitted. The medics claim it was an epidemic caused by poor hygeine at the hospital. Bulgaria is protesting the death sentences.
(Poor hygiene? Hey, I know how fragile the HIV virus is. Exposure on a countertop for a few minutes will destroy it. Are they trying to claim, as a defense, that they knowingly shared one unsterilized needle between 400 kids or something?)
