Wait, literacy was a long time ago, wasn't it?  So was the Age of Reason.  And science.

Apparently, none of these things has percolated through to Bob Jones University yet.

"Creation Science" is one thing.  But Bob Jones University is outright flat lying here.  "Electricity is a mystery."  That might have been true in 1710, ninety years before Alessandro Volta invented the first battery.  By 1810, electricity was being widely studied all over the civilized world.  But in 2010?  Look, let me be straight with you here, I don't even believe that Bob Jones has been alive for two hundred years in order to have spent them all under a rock.  "Some scientists think the sun may be the source of most electricity.  Others think that the movement of the earth produces some of it."  There is no lie so convincing and dastardly as that which knowingly contains a grain of truth placed there to mislead.

I'm not sure which is worse — the idea that there are people ignorant enough and gullible enough to swallow a piece of a-wizard-did-it crap like this, or the idea that there are people in positions of (at least within certain communities) trust who are mendacious enough to take advantage of the poor bastards by feeding them this kind of bullshit and presenting it as fact.  I can only conclude that Bob Jones "University" is actively, knowingly, and intentionally in the business of turning out people utterly unprepared to deal with the realities of the modern technological civilization on this planet.

(Speculation upon possible agendas behind such a venture is left as an exercise to the reader.)

I have little use for these cockroaches of ignorance. The are so engrossed in their dark ages suppositions and conclusions that they scurry from the light of truth, lurking on the boundary of the unknown and clinging to the shadows of their willful ignorance. They cannot defend their positions, all they can do is shout them louder and with more conviction hoping someone will listen.

The thing that really frosts me is the positions they are "defending" are not even found in the Bible. They are the conjecture of past church leaders that did not have the sciences to illuminate those areas where the Bible does not comprehensively explain point they were curious about.

This is all about pride. They are unwilling to admit that their foundational suppositions should be corrected, so they subject people to their brain-twisting justifications. They they claim they do it to defend G-d. Please! This is the Emperor called out with no clothes.

The thing I hate the most about this is that as contemptible as their gross misstatements of science are, they make a couple of useful points along the way. Proof positive that a stopped clock is right twice a day, I guess.

It’s true. No one has ever seen electricity. The wavelength of an electron is orders of magnitude smaller than the wavelength of visible light. Strangely we can see the carrier particle of electromagnetism — the photon — but we can’t see the fundamental unit of electric charge — the electron.

Likewise, we haven’t heard electricity. We hear electricity’s effects upon the world, but not electricity itself.

And, you know, that distinction between being able to directly perceive a carrier particle but not being able to directly perceive a fundamental unit of charge — that’s an interesting distinction. If you think about it, it’s really kind of strange. That makes it perfect material for inclusion in a science curricula.

But the idea that it’s a mystery?

I weep for Bob Jones’ graduates.

Wait, Bob Jones University is claiming to be skeptical about the existence of the electron? Because I noticed that this whole excerpt of nonsense managed to avoid using the term "electron" even once.

Sort of makes sense, of course. If you deny one aspect of science, the connection between the parts inevitably leads you to have to deny the others. And, eventually, reason itself.

Remember, gravity is only a theory.
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 05:20 pm (UTC)
LOL!! We can't see it directly, only its "effects."

You know, just like you can't read a Bible directly, only perceive the photons reflected from the surface of its pages. Wait, that's not what they mean ... ;-)

The Theory of Intelligent Falling. You just wait, they'll come out with that next, damn them!

Yeah, there's a line between free speech and religion, and fraud. Most Creationists belong in jail.
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 05:21 pm (UTC)
I think it would be a very bad idea to criminalize an opinion -- even a stupid opinion.
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 05:30 pm (UTC)
Criminalize their opinions? No.

Throw them in jail for using their fairy-story version of reality to defraud millions of people? Absolutely.
Wednesday, July 7th, 2010 07:22 am (UTC)
I'm with you on that. Thoughtcrime is not an idea we want embedded in our legal system (although "hate crimes" is all too far a step in that very direction, isn't it?). But fraud, now, fraud is a crime on the books everywhere. Yes, they really ought to be brought up on charges of fraud. Millions of counts thereof.

It is indeed, particularly when it is based in the accusation that someone else thinks a crime was motivated by hate, a very difficult allegation to disprove.

"Hate speech" is even worse. You can silence the entire world by labelling everything you don't want to hear as "hate speech". LET the hate-filled morons out themselves. Think of it as a public service they perform. (And as a bonus, it'll go a long way towards helping identify the people who really are committing crimes motivated by hatred.)

I agree. Which is why laws against "hate speech" and "hate crimes" get passed -- those passing them don't want the ones who are trying to tear the world down identified by the masses before the world gets torn down. (Alfred the Butler put it beautifully in Dark Knight (http://www.moviefone.com/movie/the-dark-knight/27016/main?flv=1): "Some men just want to watch the world burn." They're out there, the recreational haters as well as the dedicated terrorists and fanatics. And laws against "hate" this and "hate" that protect the bastards as well as getting some poor luckless so-and-so tossed into the slammer because some hysteric or opportunist decided to accuse him of "hating." A real circus for the masses - to distract them from the horror coming up behind them.)
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 05:17 pm (UTC)
Wow - the sheer amount of ignorance/bullshit being promoted is damned near beyond belief. Now I wonder - how many ppl are stupid enough to willingly swallow this idiotic nonsense without question?
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 05:18 pm (UTC)
30% of the population. And more in Europe.
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 05:28 pm (UTC)
More in Europe? I always thought the US Bible Belt was the heartland of creationism.

I had to read this three times before I could believe they are putting out such utter, total CRAP. Never felt electricity?! Tell that to anyone who's suddenly discovered a circuit is hot. I've made sparks, too, and a lot smaller than others who've done it for fun. I hope this university looses all accreditation until they join the rest of the world.
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 05:28 pm (UTC)
You're assuming Bob Jones "University" is accredited.

(I haven't checked. Though I suppose it would make a good yardstick for what measure of trust to place in the accrediting body.)
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 05:32 pm (UTC)
Good point. Also, methinks 'Bob Jones University' on a resume is an automatic candidate for the circular filing cabinet.

from BJU's wikipedia entry:

Since 2005 BJU has been accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools, an accrediting organization recognized by the Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.[3] The university enrolls approximately 4,200 students representing every state and fifty foreign countries. It employs a staff of 1,450, offers undergraduate degrees in over a hundred majors, and conducts precollege education from pre-kindergarten through high school.[4]

I am ashamed at the DoE....perhaps we can use this to erode their accreditation?
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 05:45 pm (UTC)
Unfortunately I suspect there'd be enough push-back from the Christian right's friends in Congress to make it politically impossible. The BJU set may be intellectually stuck in the Dark Ages, but they vote.
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 06:09 pm (UTC)
it *is* worth noting that BJU only has a *National* accreditation, and not the far more respected *Local* or *regional* one....
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 08:03 pm (UTC)
Of note: Liberty University in Lynchburg VA (founded by Jerry Falwell) is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools -- as is virtually every state-sponsored college, university and community college in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as a goodly number of private colleges (Hollins and Hampden-Sydney amongst them) and the Marine Corps University.

THAT says something about TACC&S -- and the Department of Education.

Accredited by SAC&S in South Carolina (Bob Jones is located in Greenville SC): The Citadel; Greenville Technical College; the Medical University of South Carolina; Southern Wesleyan University; Spartanburg Methodist College; the University of South Carolina (all campuses) and a number of others.

Bob Jones marches to a very different drummer.

Have you never encountered BJU before?
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 06:51 pm (UTC)
Not directly, no. The idea that a snake-oil outfit like this can represent themselves as an institution of higher learning, and get accredited as such by anyone, makes a mockery of what any educational system should be. They are not merely a little behind the times, they are actively and knowingly disseminating disinformation, then charging parents money for the privilege of filling their children's heads with mumbo-jumbo that any bright seven-year-old could refute and calling it "education".

If this is a representative sample, the entire board and staff of BJU should be in a Federal court for large-scale fraud.

They also practice sharia law on campus.

I should specify that they follow the subset of sharia law relevant to Southern Baptists. No dating, no dancing, no booze, no music, modest dress . . .

Very like Tehran.

See, it's right there on their campus map (http://www.bju.edu/welcome/visit/map/). You just connect the dots. When you do so, you'll see FSM.

This is a wonderful illustration of why intellectual perverts will be the death of us. Sexual perverts and drug addicts at least generally keep it private. These clowns try to rope millions of people into their thing, presumably for the company. May the bastards spend all eternity being zapped by electric prod-wielding demons!
