Just because it's such a cool image, really.  This is a natural-gas pocket in Darvaz, Uzbekistan (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] montieth for the positive identification) that's reportedly been burning for 35 years.  (Presumably no-one can figure out how to put it out.)

You did bring marshmallows, right...?

That doesn't look like Lithuania to me, never mind the burning hole there... (I thought I saw this on englishrussia a year or so ago, and seem to recall it was in Turkmenistan or some place like that)

The person who pointed it out to me last night said Lithuania, but may have been going from memory.

Thanks for the correction. Updated.

so, who wants to calculate an estimated carbon footprint for the Darvaz crater's activity these past 35 years...?

Do you really want to reduce the CO2 footprint? Figure out a way to put out coal and gas fires. I am willing to bet that industry is willing to help foot the bill. That is valuable natural resources that are being wasted. Please, show me your moral outrage. The coal fires produce more CO2 than all the cars and farming equipment in North America.

They do make pretty pictures...
