It is reported that GOOG has plans to roll out a gigabit fiber to the home test project later this year. They plan to connect "from 50,000 to 500,000 people"; this article doesn't say where those first connections will be, but I'm guessing it'll be the SF Bay area first. They have declared that they intend to sell their own Internet service offering "at fair and competitive prices", and that the network will be open to third-party ISPs.

I don't think SF has a chance, because the number of potential connections would be much higher than 500K - around 2 Million, isn't it? On the other hand, my home town has a high-quality research university, and a total population of under 60K - perfect demographics for this test.
