Fear and loathing in the Senate

C|Net is reporting that Carly Fiorina (you remember Carly, the second of two CEOs who presided over the destruction of Hewlett Packard) is “seriously considering” running for the Senate.

She has held influence as a chief executive of a major company and as an economic adviser for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) during his 2008 presidential bid.

Emphasis mine.  I think that latter part really says it all, doesn’t it...?

She had to have genuine skills and talent in some area to be able to rise to that level of management. At some point, you need to be able to produce results. Those skills were totally absent when it came to creating a vision and direction for HP. I suspect part of it was a culture clash from what she was used to. Still, she couldn't cope, and they didn't get rid of her until far too late.

The problem there is that DEC was toxic. Compaq died when they got DEC. All the good Compaq folk left. The dead hulk of Compaq that HP got still had the DEC screw worm living in it.

*nod* As has been commented elsewhere, she was a marketer, not an engineer, and HP was a company of and for engineers.
