it does take a certain level of ... shall we say, technical awareness, if not cultural to KNOW about regions.
say, from someone that ran into the issue due to being a fanboy, or someone who travels a lot...
it wouldn't have surprised me at ALL, if they had sent cracked copies of the dvds :> oiy.
the correct thing would have been to order all the media from the correct region, shipped at massive taxpayer expense, in order to be given to the dude in person. naturally, there would be VAT/taxes going out... but i'll bet a donut nobody paid that VAT going back in ;)
me? i have a multi-region capable player. thank you philips :)
Y'know, he must be the only person in the whole of the UK who doesn't have a regionless or multi-region DVD player. Heck, many of the retailers will (quietly) hack the player you're buying so it'll play whatever regions you want...
In response to which many studios are shipping disks that will not play on multi-region or region-free players.
Bastards.
YO!!!! GET A CLUE, YOU FUCKING MPAA MORONS!!!! You aren't dealing solely with limited numbers of film prints any more. You have NO LEGITIMATE TECHNICAL, ECONOMIC OR LOGISTICAL REASON to need to stagger movie release dates worldwide. If you insist on restricting when and where DVDs of which movies are legally purchasable, PEOPLE WHO CAN'T BUY THEM LEGALLY ARE GOING TO PIRATE THEM if they give a fuck about the movie in the first place. DUH!!! This ISN'T FUCKING ROCKET SCIENCE!!!
...to which folks over here who actually want to play films from elsewhere*1 respond to by buying another cheap player and hacking it to play the region of choice.
The whole region-coding model is just plain moronic.
*1 Assuming they havn't just decided to grab a playable copy off the torrents...
The MPAA is chained to a failing business model. They have no choices in what to pursue because they have no other options that they consider viable. They are just retreating further and further into shadow as the lights come on, like cockroaches, only wanting to work in the dark.
