My mom always says the white stripe is in the middle of the Irish flag to keep the Protestants and Catholics from killing each other. (I'm not sure which group is green and which is orange, but I'm sure she knows.)

Fortunately, the US hasn't gone that far yet. So far, the Republican and Democratic parties seem to settle for calling each other names and trying to make each other's lives as miserable as they can manage.

Orange = Protestant
Green = Catholic (St Pat's -> wearing o' th' green...)

If you really want to stir up trouble, wear orange on St Patrick's Day.....

Or just call your local Irishman a "black and tan"
