Q:  What's completely imaginary, yet scarier than Islamic terrorists?

A:  Islamic terrorists hiding behind kiddie porn.

Seriously, what idiot came up with this one?  Aside from the sheer absurdity of terrorists drawing attention to themselves by doing something blatantly illegal, that they KNOW will be investigated if noticed, just to pass messages, their own people would crucify them for so much as touching it.  Shari'a law is much harsher on kiddie porn than US law — under shari'a law, you can be executed just for passing regular porn around, let alone kiddie porn.  It's one of the most serious offences it is possible for an individual to commit under shari'a.

Ah, but as [livejournal.com profile] bruce_schneier points out, two scary things combined are much better than one for terrorizing people into doing whatever you tell them to.

It's not the terrorists in the Middle East we need to worry about.  It's the ones in our own capital.

Personally, I have always believed that to be so. What needs and desires people are forced to repress, they will find a way to satisfy, and the harsher the repression, the more likely they are to satisfy them in twisted ways. Repression has already convinced them it's a perversion anyway; it blurs the lines and lowers the barriers to going another step further.
