I've been pondering lately that I really need to rebuild the top of my desk while I have access to a fairly well-equipped wood shop. The shape of the top is currently ... uh ... sub-optimal, shall we say, and it turns out it's not just a convenience and space issue; the fact that the edge of the desk comes where it does causes me to rest my right elbow on it when I really shouldn't do so, and that in turn is causing a bursa on my right elbow (which became painfully infected recently). Not only has much of the paper skin peeled off of the desk surface, but the particleboard beneath it is beginning to break up on the surface due to moisture damage. The only problem is sourcing the cost of the materials.
The current desktop is heavy particle board with a printed paper laminate surface which is peeling badly, and is laid out like this: |

My game plan calls for rebuilding it like this, using heavyweight marine plywood surfaced with Formica in a nice granite or marble finish that'll provide good data for imaging mice and, with luck, eliminate my need to use mousepads at all. (I've been really pleased with the 3m "Precision Mousing Surface" pads I bought a while back, specifically designed for imaging mice, but they tend not to very good at either staying flat or staying put.) |
My plan, unfortunately, does not extend to coming up with the cost of materials, which I'm guessing would be on the order of $100. :p But that's lots cheaper than replacing the desk.
