Well, that's sort of part of the question, isn't it: Which Windows versions do you have to count to get "Windows 7" as the successor to Vista?

You go by the output of the VER command in DOS.

Windows 3.1 was, of course, Windows 3.1.

Windows 95, 98, and ME were all 4.something. The version of NT that parallels Windows 95 and uses the 95 look'n'feel is also NT 4.

Windows XP and Windows Server 200x obviously represent the merger of the 9x and NT lines and are 5.x.

Windows Vista is 6.x

So there ya go.
