That's exactly what Trent Reznor is doing.  Giving everyone the slip.  Or, more accurately, The Slip.  Free, gratis, DRM-free, and in your choice of high-quality MP3, lossless FLAC, lossless M4A, or super-high-quality (better than CD) 24-bit 96KHz WAV format.  (That last one is a torrent ... it's a 1.2GB download.)

I've downloaded and played it, and while the first couple of tracks are rough in spots, the win quotient is high.

I'd applaud and buy it, but the only time I recall liking his music is in covers by others...

Ah well, at least it's movement in the right direction.

You can pay the man to say thank you and never play the music, if that's what you want to do. :)

Hell, I don't even like NIN, but I may give 'em money anyway, just out of principle.

Ghosts I - IV starts at $5 for MP3s, and it's not like you have to actually _play_ it. (http://ghosts.nin.com/main/home)

Have you heard the rest of it yet? It's one of those rare albums that gets better further in.

Yup, I listened to it all last night. As I said, the beginning has some rough spots, but the overall win quotient is high. Corona Radiata reminds me of Trent's work on the Quake soundtrack. :)
