well, and the other thing to think about is that the sons of other mothers wouldn't pass on their mitochondrial dna. so this is a way of tracing back the motherline, but it doesn't mean that only those women managed to reproduce....

Yeah, I'm quite clear on the scientific background and significance et al. I was just in a whimsical mood and chose to take it grab it by the throat and run with it. ;)
