If one is to believe The Seven Daughters of Eve, most northern Europeans are descended from one woman who lived in Northern Spain, and most of the rest of the world are descended from six other women. Similar jokes were probably made when that book was published.

Well, let's face it, ultimately it's a pretty safe declaration that we're all descended from all of the original "human" population, however large or small that was. By the time you have a million years or so of interbreeding, everyone is related. I find it interesting that the mitochondrial DNA narrows down to so few lines, though.
