French researchers have developed a synthetic rubber that seamlessly heals itself when cut.  The obvious application for this stuff is tires that self-heal when punctured, but there could be all kinds of other applications.

Not for the carcase. But as a quarter-inch (or perhaps even eighth-inch) "puncture proof" self-healing liner? Sure.
