I have two thoughts on this incident in San Antonio, Texas:

  1. If you're not prepared to shoot someone when the situation demands it, you shouldn't be carrying a gun.  If you're not prepared to use it, it may end up being taken away from you and used against you or someone else.
  2. It's all very well for the perp's cousin in this case to sputter and bluster about how the perp was in a wheelchair and couldn't possibly have robbed anyone, but it's pretty inarguably clear that's exactly what he was trying to do.  People don't break and enter at 4am because the owner accidentally left a light on when he locked up.  If the perp was in a wheelchair and still tried to burglarize the place in the middle of the night, he must have been pretty damned determined about his choice of a life of crime.

The accused shooter was collared by an off-duty soldier from Fargo, N.D., who jumped the man from behind and put him in a choke hold, according to The Review Journal in Las Vegas. When asked why he intervened, Justin Lampert, 24, an Iraq War veteran, told the newspaper, "I was drunk."

Amusingly, I was just across the street at the time. Thankfully, missed that one by a few minutes. Unfortunately, it seems a significant chunk of Vegas post signs forbidding lawful carry, because obviously, this guy paid attention to those...
