The National Rifle Association would like me to renew my lapsed membership.  It's been lapsed for several years now.

What's the NRA promising to do to get me to renew?  Are they promising to fight any new "assault weapon" ban?  Are they vowing to lobby in favor of a national concealed-carry law mandating that all states recognize all other states' carry permits?  Promise no more of the endless compromises that salami-slice away my rights?

No.

Nothing like that.

They're offering me a "heavy-duty" NRA-branded duffel bag.

YOU INFERNAL IDIOTS!!!  IT'S NOT ABOUT THE DAMNED BLING!!!

It's not?

You just collapsed my whole world view.

...how much do they want for the duffel bag? I mean, mine is falling apart, I could probably use another one...

"IT'S NOT ABOUT THE DAMNED BLING!!!"

You are not the intended audience. They are clearly marketing themselves to those who are willing to be associated with the NRA.

A NRA membership is $35/year. For that I can buy twenty rounds of .45-70 Government, 75 12 gauge 2 3/4" #1 shells, or 50 rounds of .357 SIG ... guess which I consider more valuable?

I'm waiting for the new NRA-branded 5-shot 'legal everywhere' mags, with the radio-controlled police lockout.

I hear they're partnering with Colt on a new electronic-lock,round-serializing, camera equipped handgun (carries 3rnds of civilian Neoprene Ejecting Riot Foam ['NERF'] flexible baton).

It's going to be called the 'Colt Pushover'

hrm, stealing back for my own LJ, that amused me too not to inflict on more people.

If the NRA were doing anything relevant to most gun owners it would be a good deal.

This post and it's comments make me happy.

A few years back, those of us who had these problems with the NRA were considered *way* out there.

Now, it's getting to be downright mainstream, and even the NRA members I know cringe when these topics come up - or are members because they have to be (Range membership, other reasons).

This gives me a lot of hope that either the NRA will be transformed, or they'll revert back to their original purpose (Not being a Civil Rights org), and a organization that does have Civil Rights as it's main purview will be the new heavy.

The NRA is pretty worthless in many ways. They are the largest but they've either screwed up like they did in DC the first time a good challenge came up or interfered with a good CCW law in Georgia cramming in a license and qualification. This has happened a lot more than it should.

I can hope they will become better but I'll send my money to the JPFP, GOA etc.
