[livejournal.com profile] adriang posted yesterday about the Christian Right's current discomfiture over Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris "outing" of the bigotry and hypocrisy they often display.  In particular, he points a finger at those to whom freedom to practice their own religion is the foundation of all civilization, but followers of other religions are to be derided, scorned and vilified.

He has some good comments.  I suggest reading them.

(For those of you who say "Well, of course holding non-Christian beliefs is a sin, and all them non-God-fearin' people rightly deserve to be punished for it", just keep in mind that exactly that attitude is why the fundamentalist set among the Muslim world thinks you and your children can and should be killed at any opportunity.  Then remember how your own Bible tells you "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.")

I misread that first sentence to mean that Dawkins and Harris were the ones displaying bigotry and hypocrisy. That would have been interesting. Christians being peeved? Old news. Right up there with "The Wii as Porno Portal".

I have trouble with that last concept. How can someone believing differently than you possibly be threatening? (Within the bounds of common sense about actually hurting others.) I just can't wrap my head around the idea that because I am $FAITH, I must prevent everyone from being anything else. If you are that insecure in your beliefs, find something that works better for you!

why would anyone want to worship a god that they had to fear?

i can't be a sinner, i'm not christian!
