Our power was off for about seven hours, from about 1520 yesterday until about 2245.  We got off lightly, except for discovering that the Tortilla Flats restaurant more or less directly opposite from us on the Daniel Webster Highway (which still had power) almost makes Taco Bell look good.  Their chili con queso was decent, though it didn't really come with enough chips; the rest of the food was ... forgettable.

There were more branches down when we got back from Tortilla Flats, including a large one across the driveway.  Between the weight of the ice on it and the treacherous footing, it was almost all I could do to get it out of the driveway.  I'll have several large branches to drag up to the house and saw up today.  [livejournal.com profile] cymrullewes had great difficulty getting the car up the driveway on the ice.  We lit a fire in the living room fireplace, that I'd laid earlier while there was still some daylight left, and waited for power to come back on, which it finally did just as we were giving up and going to bed.  (Just in time for me to load and start the dryer so Pirate has dry pants to wear this morning.)  I powered the UPSen back on, but left the machines until this morning to be sure the power was stable and the UPSen fully recharged.

Merrimack schools are open today, but currently with a 90-minute delay.

Yay! You got my voice mail about the delay (or you got www.wzid.com to work. :-)

Ride in was actually quite pleasant and beautiful. Need to put some sort of windshield wipes in the car though. The washer fluid is okay but the wiper itself can't get to the corners. Some swerving. Not sure how much was the dip of the road and how much was ice. I know the Mini-cedes would pull on the on-ramp to 495 from rt 4.

There was something else but I can't recall at the moment.

WZID.com is perfectly usable from vorlon. On babylon5, it crashes Firefox instantly. I'm reasonably sure it's the Java.

I think the other thing was the Edubuntu that Ocelot pointed out.

Find the camp stove and discover which fuel it uses. I want to have that to use next time so we aren't dependent on the vagaries of local restaurants. Also, I need to pick up some salt for the drive way. Unless we want to buy a bag of sand from Home Depot or something like that.

I'd recommend kitty litter as more likely to be available at home with dual back-up purposes, slightly less hygrophobic, and pretty much equally effective without killing (as many?) nearby plants with run-off.

Non-clumping litter could work, yes, but won't actively melt the ice film that's the real problem.

It's supposed to get cold tonight (dropping below 10F), I'd expect more ice and maybe another power outage.

We used to go to Shorty's in Nashua for Southwestern American road house (not really Mexican) food. We haven't been in a while, but the food was really good. Especially the Espinaca Con Queso.

It's just off route 3 (Everett Turnpike), I forget if it's exit 5 or 6. It's visible from the highway, on your left if you're northbound.

I was hearing that on the radio this morning. I think it might just be time to put the heavy comforter on the bed. We'd been wondering if it would ever get cold enough to use it because the hot water heat is very effective.

You can still see the sign. But if we're going to go that far we're probably on our way down to the border anyhow for CostCo shopping and will stop and eat at On The Border in Tyngsboro.

I guess I just expected something called Tortilla Flats to be pretty good like the one in NC. I guess it is just a common name for Mexican restaurants.

I suspect that good Mexican is as hard to find in the Northeast as good Chinese is in the MidWest. ;-)

There's a restaurant called "Tortilla Flats"?!? Thats a wide spot on the Bush Highway by Canyon Lake.

Yes there is, and my experience with it mirror [livejournal.com profile] unixronin's. Not that I get out that way much any more. :-/

So what are some good restaurants in the area? 99 Restaurant is pretty good. There's the other chains like Outback and On The Border which are good.

I think DJ said that Sisko Steakhouse on Rt 3 is pretty good or at least good enough that they go back to it.

I want good Mexican and good Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian). Despite the last name it is actually rare for us to eat Italian.

Good Mexican - La Carretta, I think it's on Daniel Webster fairly close to the MA border. I never drove there, someone else was always driving. :-)

There is a Japanese Hibachi place in the same area of Daniel Webster that is good, but neither I nor my friend can remember the name of it. It's near where Exit 2 off of Route 3 comes out.

For Indian, there is India Palace, which is up by Exit 8 off of Route 3. Not sure if it's still Daniel Webster or Maine Ave. at that point.

That was off of my (and his) recollection. The friend of mine who lived in the area left his job at Oracle about 6 months ago, and moved down to Norwalk, CT. So if any of those places have closed/gotten crappy since then, we take no responsibility. :-)

Haven't seen that one. There's a La Hacienda near to Takumi or just need to go further south.

Takumi? But I thought that place just opened up. But it is possible that you are thinking of the other one next to Lovering Volvo.

Exit 8 isn't DW Hwy anymore. It's Everett Turnpike.

*snerk*

Takumi, that's the name I was trying to recall (but couldn't)

I believe I know the place. The building exterior is styled like shoji screens? We keep talking about stopping there but have never done so yet.

That sounds right, from what I remember of the outside of the place. Definitely worth a stop.
