"[The Hobbit] will definitely be shot by Peter Jackson.  The question is only when.  He wants to shoot another movie first.  Next year the Hobbit-rights will fall back to my company.  I suppose that Peter will wait because he knows that he will make the best deal with us.  And he is fed up with the studios: to get his profit share on the rings trilogy he had to sue New Line.  With us in contrast he knows that he will be paid fairly and artistically supported without reservation."

The other day I read that New Line was going to go ahead with "The Hobbit" without Peter Jackson, because of the lawsuit. I don't recall where, but I think it was on Ain't It Cool News.

There was a story a few weeks ago too that MGM was trying to acquire the film rights from New Line so they could do "The Hobbit" and another movie (based on Tolkien notes and source material) set between "The Hobbit" and LotR.

If they want to do it, they'll have to move more quickly than Hollywood studios are typically capable of to finish and release it before the rights revert. If the rights-holder wants Peter Jackson to do it, I'd guess MGM and New Line may talk a good fight but probably won't throw the money away to make a movie they'll lose the rights to before they can finish it.
