An odd question in this day and age anyway, perhaps.

I have -- or had -- a horn... no, not on my head or on my car, I'm talking about one of those things that sticks out the side of a steer's head.  B-flat trombone mouthpiece in it, blow the horn to signal ... well, lately most often to signal "Supper's ready", actually.

Anyway, Wednesday night, I broke it.  A deep chip out of the edge that I could have dealt with by just trimming it back, except that I also cracked it down one side for slightly more than half its length.  It needs replacement.

The question, probably largely directed at any of my SCAdian readers, is this:  How in blazes am I going to find a replacement?

(It doesn't necessarily have to be a cow's horn.  A ram's horn, for instance, would probably work just as well, possibly better.  And no, I don't remember where I got the first one.  I think I've had it about fifteen years.)

Birka. You can get the horn, but you'll have ot transfer the mouthpiece.

Yeah, me too.

I was going to take it to EastKingdom Univeristy at MIT tomorrow in hopes of getting it repaired (cut it down and put a band of brass around the end to keep the crack from cracking apart) or replaced before late January.

I'm really not sure how feasible repairing it is. Banding the end would probably cost more than just replacing it.

That's exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for. Thanks. :)

Can't help you with a replacement (wrong continent, and it would never get through Customs), but thought I'd let you know that an acquaintance of mine wrote a piece of music for the ram's horn, called "Shofar, sho good."

Search judaica sites for a Shofar

Yup, I considered a shofar as an alternative. I'd prefer to go with something more European/Norse style, but it's an option.

Thanks, that's a useful tip too. Tandy never occurred to me.
