For those who haven't seen it, the New York Times carried an article about the most recent National Intelligence Estimate.  That National Intelligence Estimate concludes that the Bush administration's war in Iraq has increased, not decreased, the threat of global terrorism, and that in fact the war in Iraq has caused Islamic radicalism to metastasize worldwide and has led to the birth of a new kind of independent terrorist cell with no ties to Al-Qaeda or other controlling organizations.

For those without an NYTimes subscription, [livejournal.com profile] cymbeline_one has reproduced the entire text of the article here.

Of course, this isn't what the NIE said, but leave it to the NYT to take a months old NIE, take a line from it and spin that into a pre-election hit piece. First CBS, now the NY Times. As in the CBS case, the only question is whether or not the NYT knowingly did this or if they're only so incompetent that they got played. Either way, the reporter and editors involved should be out the door before the end of the week. Prolly won't happen, tho...

Anyway, the conclusions have been declassified now:

Editor should've been in prison for treason when he ordered to blow the SWIFT moninoring program some time ago. Selective quotation to torn NIE around now is small potatoes. So there's no "prolly" about it, they do it every day.

For more counter to the NYT's spin, here's some references to what the NYT DIDN'T quote...
