Hypothetical conversation excerpt:

Him:  "So where do you live?"

Her:  "645 State Street, Rhode Island."

Him:  "Uh, which city in RI?"

Her:  "DUH!"

(Yeah, I know, there is actually more than one city in Rhode Island.  But not much more.  And why IS it called Rhode Island, anyway?  It isn't an island....)

Looks like Portsmouth, Middletown, and Newport are on Rhode Island... the state as it is *now* is mostly not-on-an-island but you can see how it might be islandy to folks coming from the Mass area.
