[livejournal.com profile] suzilem pointed out this free domain name appraiser at leapfish.com.  Unfortunately, as they say, "You get what you pay for, if you're lucky," and I'm guessing it's WILDLY optimistic.  It wasn't very impressed with caerllewys.net, quoting about $2900, but it claims babcom.com, my primary domain which I've had since about 1994 or 1995, is worth slightly over $71,000.

Holy crap, Batman.  If someone offered me $71,000 for babcom.com, I'd sell it so fast there'd be scorchmarks on the Internet.

See, now that free domain name appraiser needs to include a link to an online domain name auction site.

Say..... Is there an online domain name auction site?

If not, might this be a site a Unix geek could set up and maintain? Taking a 3% cut a la ebay? Without infringing on ebay patents and so forth?

If you do it and become wildly successful, how much of a finder's fee would you give me?

I don't know if there is a specific domain-name auction site or not. A lot of registrars auction domain names. I don't know whether it's something a private individual could set up.

My two domains together are worth about $14,000 apparently.

Of course, the true measure is whether you can find someone willing to pay that for them .....

1211.net came in at around $23K

for a reality check here

1211.com is owned by an extremely expensive apartment building in NYC, apparently one of the ritziest places to live in the city.

In the 9 year's I've owned 1211.net, not once has 1211.com ever approached me to buy out my domain to protect their potential residents from arriving at my den of iniquity on the `net

Yeah, no-one's exactly been queueing up breaking the door down to get babcom.com, either.

I wanted sourav.com, but the lowest the owner (and domain-grabber) would go was several hundred $$. Perhaps he knew that "Sourav" is the name of the Indian cricket captain.

So I got sourav.net for nothing. This site appraises it for $21.6K. If I turned it into a cricket site, it might be worth that.
