OK, folks, pop quiz:  When you make a lump payment and pay off a credit-card debt, which of the following things happen?

1. There's less money in your bank account.
2. There's a lower balance on your credit card.
3. There's more credit available on your credit card.
4. You get investigated by Homeland Security.
5. All of the above.

Correct answer:  5, "All of the above."

This is bloody ridiculous.

In other news, the inestimable dr_nebula reports that the Dawn probe to Ceres and Vesta, already 90% funded, almost complete, and set to launch in three months, has been cancelled because the mission scientists asked for an additional $40 million added to the $371 million already spent on it.  So for the sake of $40 million, NASA is taking $371 million that's already spent and flushing it down the toilet.

Just think, that $40 million would fund Bush's precious war in Iraq for, what ... a few hours?  Maybe a day, if it's a slow day and no-one fires a weapon?

Considering I've made larger lump sum payments on credit cards and our HELOC recently (in some cases paying them off and some not) I would like, as Paul Harvey says, to hear the rest of the story.

There's not much real information about what happened in this article, but it is far more likely that they were tripped up by a drug related financial laws that have been on the books for 20+ years. My grandmother used to get a nice annual visit from the DEA when she'd was working on giving away all of her money to her grand-kids 10-15 years ago.
