I like the clean look of the layout I'm currently using, but I dislike the amount of space it wastes (barely half the width of my window is available for actual text, by the time all is said and done), and wide objects in other folks' posts break my friends page.  However, until I upgrade to a paid account, I can't create my own layout (or my own mood icons, which is slightly annoying because, expressive as they are, many of these little dragony guys are REALLY badly mismatched to their associated moods, as previously noted), and I'm restricted in which of the existing layouts I can use.

Grfle, mrmble, growlf.  Or something like that.  Somewhere there has to be a better layout.

My friends view uses tabular indent, one of the predefined styles. This takes care of the wide stuff problem (which is why I chose this style in the first place).

I tried tabular indent for a while, but decided I didn't really like it. I infer that having a different layout for your journal and your friends page is another thing that requires a paid account...?

Nope. Even free users (I tested with [livejournal.com profile] lemurbaby) can change each individual page to a different style. You can do it at http://www.livejournal.com/modify.bml.

Tabular indent was the only one I found that worked well, but there may be another. It isn't my favorite either, but it's better than having to side-scroll every time someone posts a long URL or huge picture.

This appears to be true of S1 styles, but not of S2, at a guess, because I see no way on that page to do it.
