OK, folks.  It's time to stop using UPS to ship anything breakable.  For the second time this year, a someone shipped me a computer via UPS ground, this one coming only the few hundred miles from New York City; and for the second time this year, with it only in their hands for a single day, UPS severely damaged it.

FedEx Ground is out there, it frequently costs less than UPS Ground, and they seem to take much more care with packages.  Give'em your business.  UPS is dropping the ball (and your packages).

Jana worked at UPS 1979-83. Her advice was to expect everything to be drop-kicked, tossed, etc. They (the sorters) used to have competitions to see who could throw the largest package the farthest.

Interesting. My experience is the opposite - I'd much rather have my packages arrive by UPS than FedEx and I've never had any problems with damage from UPS.

With one exception, I think every package I've had badly damaged in shipping, either to or from me, was shipped UPS. The sole exception was shipped USPS Priority Mail.

They used to be really good, but have become really bad.

Yeah, the Civilian Marksmanship Program stopped using UPS to ship rifles years ago, too many of them arrived severely damaged. Gotta figure that if they can mangle M1 Garands, which are shipped in a sturdy box with lots of eggshell foam, they'll break anything.

how the hell can you mangle an M-1?

I'll never forget something a UPS driver once told me. He had sort of tossed down a package at my work and I commented on the "fragile" sticker.
"Let me tell you," he said, "if we get something to you in one piece, there is nothing you can do to hurt it."
