vernard points out this StratFor article on the strategic importance of New Orleans to the US economy. Simply put, it is the largest single route into and out of the United States for bulk goods, handling 57 million tons of imports and 52 million tons of exports per year. The importance is not just the Port of Southern Louisiana itself, but its access to the Mississippi river as a route for barge transportation throughout much of the heartland of the United States. The road and rail infrastructure to move that much cargo, if Mississsippi barge transport is unavailable, simply does not exist at the present time.
