[livejournal.com profile] interdictor reports that New Orleans police have been joining the looters, and the remaining honest cops are holed up under siege in their precincts and taking automatic-weapons fire.

The Big Easy is falling apart ... what's left of it.

Update:

Confirmation from the Times-Picayune, with photos, here.  This PDF page has a front-page photo of uniformed New Orleans cops leaving Wal-Mart with an armful of DVDs and what looks like maybe a copy of Windows XP.

This is despicable.  To say "We don't have the power to stop it" is one thing.  But to JOIN THE LOOTERS?!?

They're on the way. 3,500 Guardsmen have been sent to NOLA specifically to quell the looting.

There are still National Guardsmen in the country?

Fortunately.

There's 1600 mobilized in Mississippi right now for disaster relief, and Alabama's sending two battalions of theirs to Mississipi to help.

There was video on the news last night showing the guard already in New Orleans.

I know if I was in NO right now - I'd be forming up neighborhood militia to halt the insanity at least on a local level.

I despise looters - esp. when they put hospitals under seige (go read some other posts).

You and me both.

(Lemme guess ..... they're after the drugs?)

Most likely. To threaten staff and patients is beyond redemption.

Now those bastards I wouldn't hesistate air conditioning their drug-crazed brain pans.

Um... is there proof that that police officer didn't just take those back from a looter? I didn't read anything in the skim I did of the article or see anything in the picture to say that he is actually stealing these items.
Just my two cents. I know how some journalists enjoy stirring up trouble.

There is widespread documentation of looting by New Orleans police, as well as eyewitness accounts by New Orleans bloggers.

It's official.

I hate everyone.

Eh. Wasn't that long ago they were the most corrupt cops in the country. So no real surprise.
