...WITHOUT having a background check done on you to determine whether you're a potential turrahist, and being made to pay for the damned check?

[livejournal.com profile] nephthys510 has the details.  Interestingly, the guy behind this is the founder of the Klingon Language Institute.

Huh? I mean, sure, I'm happy to participate in Give Us Books, but huh?

There's a couple of Official or Semi-Official Programs for sending books and magazines to the troops. The primary one is booksforsoldiers.com.

They will, it appears, make you undergo a background check before they'll accept them -- and they'll make you pay a $12 "application and processing" fee for the privilege. This is supposed to somehow protect the privacy of the troops. (Like you even know who your books will go to in the first place.)

WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT, OVER.

Ah, I see. Actually, the booksforsoldiers site, if I read the FAQ correctly, gives the volunteer a specific military member's name and military address, and you send the books to that particular person.

I seem to recall that "they" cancelled the "Any Soldier" cards and letters program; is that correct, do you know?

I stand corrected on that score. I didn't read the FAQ. I was under the impression you didn't know who would receive what you sent.

No idea, sorry ....
